Friday Random Ten the sixth: the “My Left Foot” Edition
No snarks directed towards Daniel Day-Lewis. My own (tendon-injured) left foot was throbbing in pain last night and, as you might imagine, I am now groggy and exhausted (and still very much in pain) in this Friday-morning-after
But enough about me and my planter fasciitis.
TGIF! And that, of course, means another TGFFRT*. Let me recap the rules for the rare uninitiate:
Set your iPod (or inferior MP3 device) on shuffle and reveal the first ten tracks that appear, without any editing or omissions, and likely with the customary bonus track that makes me wonder why we haven’t just started calling this the “Friday Random Eleven.” Let your musical taste (or the lack of same) be revealed in all its quirky glory.
Today’s contributions from Frankenpod:
- Si*Se; More Shine (iTunes free single of the week)
- Ben Folds; Protection (Speed Graphic)
- Savage Garden; Truly Madly Deeply (eponymous)
- George S. Clinton; Breakfast (The Music of Red Shoe Diaries)
- Alanis Morissette; Wake Up (Jagged Little Pill)
- Robbie Williams; Angels (The Ego Has Landed)
- Savage Garden; Crash and Burn (Affirmation)
- Ella Fitzgerald; Night and Day (Ken Burns Jazz: Ella)
- Max Raabe and the Palaster Orchester; Kiss (Superhits)
- Neil Diamond; Song Sung Blue (Play Me: The Complete Uni Studio Recordings)
- BONUS: Alanis Morissette; Hand in My Pocket (Jagged Little Pill)
Explanations and Associations?
Luddite Badge: Speed Graphic is the only “album” (and it’s really an EP rather than a full-length album, wouldn’tcha say?) I’ve bought off iTunes. I’ll buy singles, certainly, if there’s only one song off an album I want, and yes, I’m happy to lift iTunes’ weekly singles (when I lik ‘em) as a way to decide if I like someone well enough to take the next step in our musical relationship. But once I hit my “two-song rule” and get interested in the whole album, then I’m still a tactile CD-buying kind of gal, and I expect I always will be.
Getting Old: That damned Red Shoes music! I like the album well enough, but for these few cuts to come back week after week is driving me slightly up a tree. I am seriously verging on two possible courses of action. 1) Breaking the rules of the Friday Random Ten (gasp!) and skipping past these songs if (who am I kidding?) when they pop up in the future. 2) Just deleting them from Frankie altogether.
Statistical Anomaly Squared: I’ve recently been downloading more songs from my CDs onto Frankie. So now, instead of pulling two pairs (!) of artist-matched songs out of a pool of 1800, I pulled them out of a pool of 1938. Golly.
Singalongs: Steve (Matt’s twin brother) was visiting us the weekend after Live 8, when MTV decided to go back again and get the coverage sorta-right. Both of the guys looked funny at me when I reacted with such glee to the sight of Robbie Williams and the beginning piano flourish to “Let Me Entertain You,” but once they heard the entire London audience singing along with “Angels,” they had to admit that Robbie had something going on. More personally, we always used to warble along with “Song Sung Blue” on family car trips—Neil Diamond was one of the few artists we could all agree on enough to listen peacefully.
Seen Live: Thought I was gonna get through a set without having an answer for this one! But, instead, Max Raabe came waltzing from the woodwork at #9. Scott’s review back from December reveals that the Orchester drew only from their more traditional swing numbers in the concert so, alas, I did not have thepleasure of seeing Max channel Prince in white tie and tails.
Other players: Ben, Brian, Fred, Howard, Lauren, Luna, Marisa, Mark, Matthew. (Luna got in just under the wire!)
