Call Me Gimpy
Monday, February 28th, 2005My foot-ankle-shin has been hurting like a summabitch for a couple weeks. The strange anatomical hyphenate is meant to indicate the creeping nature of the pain.
It started out in the left foot. I chipped a bone there some 14 years ago, so I initially presumed that this was just some sign from my body that I’m getting into middle age and that old fractire will be aching with wet winters and weather changes from now until the day I die. (Oh joy oh rapture.)
But then the ankle began to hurt, feeling weak and tender, though still able to bear weight. And then a week ago, I was sitting at my desk and just moved my foot wrong. BAM! This intense pain went shooting up my shin and the after-effects kept throbbing lightly painful for an hour or so.
That’s when I finally called a doctor to make an appointment. I hat doctors, so this is a bit of a sacrifice for me. I know the doc will just look at it and send me out for an x-ray, but I have to start somewhere or I’ll never get this diagnosed. I’m still half-expected the eventual diagnosis to be "you’re getting old and this ex-fracture will be doing this for the rest of your livelong days." But maybe it’ll be something real and treatable?
Alas, last Thursday’s appointment was cancelled on account of the snowstorm. Here’s hoping that tonight’s snowstorm ends and is cleared out quickly enough so’s not to disturb tomorrow’s appointment.
